The Best Easy Slime Recipe for Kids

Have you made your own DIY slime? If you’re anything like me, you’ve been avoiding doing so!

As a former third grade teacher, I hated when students would bring slime to school. So naturally, when my five year old, Ella, asked to make slime, I was not excited.

Not only that, but Ella is very picky about different sensory experiences. She does NOT like getting messy! So I knew that a sticky, messy slime wouldn’t work for us.

But it’s summer vacation and I’m trying to be a good sport and, I mean, I do call myself the Kind of Crafty Mom.

So I decided to give it a shot! I researched several recipes and found one by Surviving a Teachers Salary that claimed to be worry- and mess-free. Read on to learn how to make this slime, plus some of my thoughts and a few tips and tricks from our experience!

Easy and Mess-Free DIY Sime Recipe

slime ingredients
  • ½ tbsp baking soda
  • 1.5 tbsp contact solution (make sure it includes boric acid – we used Equate brand from Walmart and it worked perfectly!)
  • 4 fl oz white school glue
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Glitter (optional- see my note below!)

Directions

  1. Pour the entire contents of a 4 oz bottle of glue into a bowl.
add baking soda

2. Add ½ tbsp of baking soda and mix.

add food coloring

3. Add your food coloring and, if you are using any, glitter. Mix until you have your desired color.

add contact solution

4. Add 1.5 tbsp of contact solution and mix.

5. As you mix, slime will form, and it will become harder to mix. Take the slime out and knead it in your hands.

Notes, Tips & Tricks

**The original recipe called for 1 tbsp of contact solution and said to add a little more if needed. I knew we did not want our slime to be sticky at all, so we used about 1.5 tbsp.

**The boric acid in the contact solution is what turns this into slime! Here are a few others that will work: BioTrue, Opti-Free, Up & Up

**We added glitter to our slime and it’s the only thing that wasn’t “mess free”. Some glitter stuck to whatever surface Ella played with her slime on. To make your slime truly mess-free, you may want to leave the glitter out!

**We used white glue, which gave our slime a more opaque look. I have read that clear school glue works as well, but I haven’t tried it myself. I feel like glitter would show up better in clear glue, too!

Extending the Slime-Themed Learning and Fun

Ella came up with the idea to make slime after watching a Danny Go! episode all about slime on Yippee TV. We have been loving Yippee TV for full episodes of Danny Go!, VeggieTales, and tons of other Christian shows. Click here for a free trial of Yippee TV!
