How to Teach Your Child about Jesus Through Everyday Routines
As a Christian parent, you probably already know it’s important to teach your child about Jesus and introduce them to God’s Word. But how? The idea of explaining your faith to your young child can feel overwhelming! Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. By putting a few simple routines in place as a family, you can easily start introducing your child to the Christian faith in a meaningful way.

Simple Routines for Teaching Your Children About God
- Go to church (and make it a priority) – If you aren’t already attending church regularly, take this as your sign to start. I know, it can be easy to say “We’ll start next week…”, but remember, the things that YOU model as important, your children will hold as important, too. Find a church with a strong children’s program, so that it’s a positive experience for everyone. And commit to getting to church weekly.
- Pray aloud together – If you aren’t already praying aloud as a family, I think the easiest time to start is at mealtime.
Here are a few different prayers we like to say together before dinner:
- “Our hands we fold, our heads we bow. For our food and drink we thank God now. Amen!”
- “God made the sun, God made the sea. God made the little fishies, and God made me. Thank you God for the sun, thank you God for the sea. Thank you God for the little fishies, and thank you God for me! Amen!”
- “God is great, God is good, thank you God, for our food! Amen!”
We also always pray before bedtime. This is when we usually take turns praying aloud from the heart.
And one of the best habits you can teach your child is to pray when something’s wrong! When our five year old feels nervous, or sad, or even mad, we remind her to pray and ask Jesus to help her feel better. This is a habit you want to instill in your child early!
3. Listen to worship music – There’s nothing quite like hearing your five year old sing, “Christ is my firm foundation, the rock on which I stand!”. Plus, playing worship music in your house (or car, or wherever) changes the atmosphere! It’s hard to stay in a bad mood when you’re praising God through music!
4. Read a children’s Bible together – We have this storybook Bible and we love it. The pictures are fun and the stories are engaging!
5. Let them see you reading your Bible – This is one I am working on getting better at. I often do my daily Bible reading on the YouVersion app on my phone… which is wonderful, but it means my children don’t often SEE me reading the Bible. Make it a point to pull out your physical Bible, and spend time reading it in front of them. Our children should see that mom and dad read God’s Word, too!

6. Do Bible-themed crafts and activities – This is such a fun way to help kids make meaningful connections after reading from the storybook Bible.

7. Watch shows that teach about Bible stories – we recently started using Yippee TV and we love it. You can stream VeggieTales, Danny Go!, plus tons of other shows that teach children about the Bible. I also love knowing that we’re not going to stumble across anything weird or inappropriate while watching. You can click here to start a FREE trial and check it out!
8. Read devotionals as a family – My absolute favorite devotionals for kids and families are by Heidi Lee Anderson. We have her Christmas and Easter family devos, which are both printable resources, and SO engaging for kids. She has a new one, too, called “Hello, I’m Jesus,” but we haven’t done that one yet!
Here are a few more devotionals you can check out. We haven’t completed these personally, so if you do, I’d love to hear about your experience!:
- Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
- Indescribable by Louie Giglio
- The Bible Recap Kids’ Devotional by Tara-Leigh Cobble
- Doodle Devotions for Kids by Nancy Taylor
