Around here, we love fall!  The cooler weather, preparing for Halloween, and of course… pumpkins!  There are so many fun crafts and activities you can do with your little ones that revolve around pumpkins.  We did exactly that with these pumpkin life cycle worksheets and activities, which are perfect for some fun at-home learning, or to use in your preschool or early elementary school classroom.

But before we dive into any pumpkin life cycle fun – how cute are these little egg carton pumpkins?  They were SO easy to make.  Just cut apart an egg carton, flip each piece upside down, and color or paint each little piece orange (we used our favorite paint sticks and they worked great).  Then I poked a small hole in the top and placed a small piece of green pipe cleaner through the hole.  And just for fun, we added googly eyes and a smile!

Hands-on pumpkin fun

If you’re planning on teaching your little one about the life cycle of a pumpkin, what better way than by diving into an ACTUAL pumpkin?!  This part is optional, of course, but nothing beats a hands-on, real-life experience to help children learn.  Plus, it’s FUN!

Ella having fun carving a pumpkin

At our house, we were planning on carving pumpkins anyway, so this part was a no-brainer! I encouraged my then-four-year-old, Ella, to help remove the seeds and the “guts” from inside our pumpkin.  Allow your child to investigate!  (Added bonus: this is a fun and messy sensory experience!)

You can even take the seeds and guts and put them in a Ziploc bag for a super-easy pumpkin sensory bag that children can continue to play with and explore for days!

Reading about the pumpkin life cycle

Carving pumpkins gave Ella some real life experience with two different stages of the pumpkin’s life cycle (the seeds and the actual pumpkin).  Now we were ready to learn more!  I set out all of the pumpkins that we had… we had quite a collection this year!  I also set out the printable activities I had prepared.  I like to leave this kind of set-up out for Ella to discover on her own – she gets so excited when she finds it!

After Ella found my little set-up, I read “A Pumpkin Grows” to her, and we talked about each stage in the pumpkin life cycle.  We talked about how other plants have similar life cycles, even if they look different.

Next, I showed her the other activities I had prepared for her.  She only needed a little help from me to complete the sequencing activity and the matching activity.  She was excited to trace the vocabulary words, too!
